Natal Carbineers

Regiment

Name history

  • 1st Mounted Rifles (Natal Carbineers) (until 1934)
  • Natal Carbineers (1934–1935) — this name
Reverted from "1st/2nd Mounted Rifles (Natal Carbineers)" to "1st/2nd Natal Carbineers" — part of a UDF-wide 1934 round of changes that dismounted several mounted-rifle units to infantry (confirmed pattern for Umvoti Mounted Rifles); exact Natal Carbineers dismounting date not independently confirmed for this regiment specifically.
  • Royal Natal Carbineers (1935–1961)
"Royal" conferred (same act as Durban Light Infantry).
  • Natal Carbineers (from 1961) — this name
Republic of South Africa, 31 May 1961: "Royal" dropped (same republic-wide change as Durban Light Infantry).

Natal colonial mounted regiment. Gillings records Maj Duncan Mackenzie’s Natal Carbineers riding with Capt H. Bottomley’s Imperial Light Horse in Maj H. de la P. Gough’s composite mounted infantry into Ladysmith just before sunset on 28 February 1900, ending the 118-day siege (sections mixed so neither unit alone could claim first entry).
