Sergeant Thabiso Nelson Shandu, born 21 August 1981, age 42 at death. Married; proud father of five children (youngest seven months at time of death). Served SAPS for 13 years from appointment 22 March 2010. Stationed at SAPS KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal. On 22 July 2022, responded with colleagues to robbery in progress at KwaMashu Spar; team came under fire from unidentified assailants; sustained serious gunshot wound to upper body; extensive medical intervention and prolonged occupational injury leave; bravely returned to duty September 2023; lasting effects continued; admitted to hospital and passed away 4 January 2024. Name engraved on Wall of Remembrance for the 2024/2025 Roll of Honour (SAPS Commemoration magazine; Annual Report PERSAL 7182525-8).
