2465Flying Officer Hope Braine, 403211, Royal Australian Air Force, aged 28. Killed in flying battle, off Sardinia. Wellington HX - of 221 Sqn RAF took off from RAF Luqa, Malta, at 1830Z hours on 7 February 1943 to illuminate a convoy 60 miles east of Sardinia. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take off and it did not return to base.

27339Private Jan Vikwane, N/20494, Native Military Corps, S.A. Forces. Died in bombings on the city of Chateauroux. Allied Prisoners of War were settled in the German aerodrome of La Martinerie (nearby Chateauroux). This airfield was bombed by 8th Air Force on 5 February 1944. Although this air raid mission was successful, POWs suffered 15 wounded and 4 dead. Among these casualties were 8 South African prisoners (Vikwane died two days after, on 7 February 1944).

1474Lieutenant Donovan John Beisiegel, 542354V, 145 (R.A.F.) Sqdn. (South African Air Force), aged 21. Died in Aircraft Accident, Spitfire, collided with another aircraft.
1945
1533Flight Sergeant Leslie Bellingan, 710193, 159 Sqdn. (Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve). Executed, whilst a POW. Liberator V BZ938 'Wottawitch' of Special Signals Flight, attached to 159 Sqn RAF, took off from Digri air base, some 100 kms west of Calcutta, India, and set course for Burma. Whilst returning home to base 'Wottawitch'came under fire from a Japanese night fighter. Baled out and captured by Japanese. They were taken by truck to Rangoon jail. Bellingan, Woodbridge, Woodage and Snelling were taken to a forest (presume Kyaukkon Reserved Forest) on the outskirts of Myaungmya and beheaded by the Japanese.

31277Second Lieutenant Douglas Raymond Leah, P1/40323, 2 Sqdn. (South African Air Force), aged 23. Killed in action, in North American F-51 Mustang #307. On 7 February 1951, 2Lt D.R. Leah was flying one of four Mustangs, led by Commandant S. Theron, on a reconnaissance of the Wonsan-Hamhung area, on the east coast of North Korea. After expending their bombs on a supply dump, the patrol found three camouflaged vehicles on a road just north of Yonghong, which they proceeded to strafe with their machine guns. During 2Lt Leah's second attack, he pulled out to the right but his starboard wing struck the ground, causing his aircraft to cartwheel into the ground and burst into flames. The wreckage was scattered over a wide area.
