Killed in action, when "C" Coy was ordered to carry out a left flanking attack on Monte Bagno. He was hit by Spandau fire while attacking a strong point. His body was only recovered on the 20th, due to heavy undergrowth and the tactical situation.

Died of wounds, wounded while on patrol near Castel Barroli on the evening of the 14th September, shot through the stomach and bladder. He was reported missing, suspected POW but had been captured by the Germans and admitted to the main casualty station of 1/362 Corps at Lizzano where he died on 17th September at 0200 hrs. He initially was buried in the Heros' Acre at Lizzano, grave No 20.

22074Flight Lieutenant John Russell, 80195, 150 Sqdn. (Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve), aged 34. Killed in action. Took off from Regina to bomb marshalling yards at Bresica near Lake Garda. Aircraft was loaded with 9 SBCs (small bomb containers), each carrying approx. 50 x 4lb incendiary bombs. Plan was to drop high explosive bombs, then incendiary bombs. Squadron Ops Book records: 'Not heard of after take off' Squadron Gunnery Leader reported: at 21.00 hours at a height of 5-- feet, heading 13 3 degrees at position 44.55N 11.16, after leaving the target, yellowish white fighter flares were observed on the port beam at about 800yds away. Pilot immediately turned to starboard and resumed course. Shortly afterwards, an explosion in the sky was seen which was suggestive of an aircraft disintegrating and falling to the ground on fire. It burned green and red for a while afterwards.

An UNCONFIRMED report states this Halifax crashed 40 metres from the Aaldonk to the Reichswald road near Ottersum, E of the River Maas and on the NE outskirts of Gennep.
