Drill Instructor attached to First City Volunteers (also Drill Instructor to the City's Cadet Corps), a long-time Grahamstown resident. Taken ill with erysipelas, seemed to be recovering, then had a sudden relapse and died within half an hour. Left a wife and several young children. Accorded a full military funeral with firing party, troop horse led behind the hearse (boots reversed), massed local Corps and cadet units, and the Dead March in Saul; coffin inscribed "Frederick William Harris, Died Sept. 7th 1900, Aged 40 Years and 6 Months". Referred to as "Sergt-Major Harris" at the funeral (initial report gave "Sergt."). No SAWGP record found — new ROH record.
