Sergeant Owen Sibusiso Yeni, born 14 October 1979, age 45 at death. Proud father of one adult child (26 at time of death). Served SAPS for 21 years from appointment 19 September 2003. On 3 November 2024, reported for duty at Public Order Policing Unit, Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal; responded to high-risk domestic violence complaint involving a firearm in Boboyi; after briefing with members and the community, formed part of tactical intervention team; while breaching suspect's residence with Sergeant Nkomo under low-visibility conditions, exchange of gunfire; both officers wounded; Yeni sustained fatal upper-body injury and died at the scene despite vest. Fatal shot later attributed to fellow officer's accidental discharge of service firearm. Case of culpable homicide and negligent discharge of a firearm opened at Port Shepstone, under investigation. Name engraved on Wall of Remembrance for the 2024/2025 Roll of Honour (SAPS Commemoration magazine; Annual Report PERSAL 7022690-3, Division Visible Policing and Operations).
