Notes

Son of Mr. T. Verhoef, of Germiston. | Disqus 14 Apr 2018 (schoolmate, st 6-7 with him): fairly sure he died February 1985 not 1984. ROH date left 1984-02-08 pending a better source.

Research notes

Disqus 14 Apr 2018: possible death year 1985 not 1984.
25 Sep 2026, Unit2 service-branch sweep: the stored Secondary Unit "Navy" was CLEARED. It was not a sub-unit, it was a service-branch word, and it CONTRADICTED this record's own Branch, "Army". Across the roll 787 records carried such a contradiction; judged against Corps and Regiment -- independent of both columns -- the evidence backed Branch 744 times and Unit2 not once. Branch is therefore kept and the contradicting word removed. Nothing is guessed: this man's branch of service is already recorded, and his sub-unit, if any, is simply not known.

We were all great dreamers. I hope and pray we have all learnt from this loss. Thanks for all you did for us... even though many didn't appreciate it.

From Marius Van Niekerk: I remember that day well. We were stationed at Golf Ops at Ondangwa Airforce Base. 8 SAI Echo Co. The infantry platoons did 3 to 4 day patrols around the base to keep it clear of unwanted "visitors". Delport was a scary dude. Caught Roman spiders with his bare hands and made them fight scorpions in a Dixie plate/pan. He wore a full beard and there were rumours about him mutilating enemy corpses, thus getting years of extra service. He shot Lt. Verhoef while drunk and got into a violent argument with the Lt. It was a somber day. The entire company assembled and were told the news. We saw the casavac choppers leaving an hour earlier, so we knew something was wrong. Was a strange feeling. You know that you and your comrades are at risk, but you never expect a blatant own forces killing like this.
