Johannes Anonie van Niekerk, the son of Gerrit Jacobus van Niekerk, former Commissioner of the Zuid Afrikaanse Polisie (ZARP) died in the battle of Modder River of wounds sustained in battle. He was married with two young children and stayed on the farm Niekersrust outside Schweizer-Reineke. He was the Native Commissioner at Bloemhof and held the rank of Kommedant. His name appears on the memorial just outside Kimberely near Magersfontein. paul van Niekerk
