Son of Frederick William Spurling (Sub-Warden of Keble College, Oxford, and Canon Residentiary of Chester) and Clara Eyton, his wife. Born on 27 April 1885 in England. He was a farmer at Egerton, Cradock District. He then became the Farm Manager at van Wyksfontein for JBS Greathead. Married Mary Geraldine Greathead (who died June, 1916) daughter of Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London and Esther Louisa Merriman, on 13 December 1913 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.
