The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the air and space force of the United Kingdom, British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies. It was formed on 1 April 1918 by merging the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. It is a British service, distinct from the South African Air Force. South Africans recorded against RAF units were typically serving with the RAF (or seconded to it), not as SAAF squadrons.
