1944

3181Signaller Stephanus Buys, 117010, South African Corps of Signals (Corps), aged 20. Killed in action. In the North Italian village of Carpane on 27 September 1944 the Germans executed 16 Allied soldiers captured fighting with Italian partisans in that area. Escaped with other South Africans from a nearby POW camp and joined up with local partisans to carry on fighting the Germans. They became such a thorn in the flesh of the Germans that a special operation was mounted in the Monte Grappa region to capture them. They were eventually captured and murdered by the Germans. Every year on this day since the end of the war the villagers of Carpane have held a memorial service at this spot by the side of the road where they were killed. For many years the identity of the 16 was not known and the monument was simply inscribed to "16 unknown". It was only about 4 or 5 years ago that their identity was uncovered by Sonia Residori, an Italian academic researcher.

- 1942 17625 — Sergeant James Alexander William Moss, 89605, 2 Field Regiment (South African Artillery (Corps)), aged 43. Died of dysentery, whilst a POW, at Benghazi. He had been captured at Tobruk on the 20 June 1942.

- 1943 874 — Lieutenant Matthew Edward Bagg, 206359V, 24 Squadron. Died of injuries, received September 24th, as a POW, shot down by flak San Lucio, in Douglas Mk III Boston #HK888.

- 1943 18018 — Private Alfred George Mundell, 12230, Die Middelandse Regiment, aged 38. Died whilst a POW. He was captured on 20 June 1942 and subsequently shipped to Italy.

- 1943 24321 — Captain George Ross Strachan, 61832V, South African Internment Corps (Corps), aged 46. Died of lobar pneumonia, clot of blood in right auricle.

- 1944 3181 — Signaller Stephanus Buys, 117010, South African Corps of Signals (Corps), aged 20. Killed in action. In the North Italian village of Carpane on 27 September 1944 the Germans executed 16 Allied soldiers captured fighting with Italian partisans in that area. Escaped with other South Africans from a nearby POW camp and joined up with local partisans to carry on fighting the Germans. They became such a thorn in the flesh of the Germans that a special operation was mounted in the Monte Grappa region to capture them. They were eventually captured and murdered by the Germans. Every year on this day since the end of the war the villagers of Carpane have held a memorial service at this spot by the side of the road where they were killed. For many years the identity of the 16 was not known and the monument was simply inscribed to "16 unknown". It was only about 4 or 5 years ago that their identity was uncovered by Sonia Residori, an Italian academic researcher.

- 1951 32438 — Corporal Willem Daniel Patterson, P2/8447, 2 Squadron, aged 38. Died in Military Vehicle Accident. A/Cpl W.D. Patterson was a member of a detail loading an aircraft at K-10, Chinhae, and was directing a transport vehicle that was reversing towards the aircraft. This vehicle failed to stop, and crushed A/Cpl Patterson against the aircraft's fuselage.
