976Sergeant Sydney Douglas Baldachin, 778405, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, aged 20. Died in Aircraft Accident, Hampden X2959 took off from RAF Balderton for night circuits and landing training exercise. The aircraft was slighly off course and while trying to find the airfield at 0025 hours hit some tress and then plunged down into houses in London Road, New Balderton. Shortly after impact the aircraft burst into flames with three houses being totally destroyed. Two of the crew were killed and the third was slighly injured.

29037Greaser Han Shing Yue, S.S. Empire Lancer (Greenock) (Merchant Navy), aged 24. On 16 Aug, 1944, the unescorted Empire Lancer was torpedoed and sunk by U-862 in the Mozambique Channel. The master, 36 crew members and five gunners were lost. 34 crew members and three gunners landed 60 miles south of Lumbo, Portuguese East Africa ten days later.

Died when a 30mm HE shell from an Impala was picked up by a fellow soldier, the shell was unexploded and one of the two of them took it apart with a Swiss army knife. The shell exploded killing him.
