3411Lieutenant John Leonard Caro, 79689V, 614 (R.A.F.) Sqdn. (South African Air Force), aged 25. Died in Aircraft Accident, Halifax II JN912, while carrying six crew and four Squadron personnel as passengers, ditched in the Gulf of Taranto, 20 miles off Cape Spulico, after the port inner engine caught fire. On hitting the water JN912 nosed over on to its back. The dinghy failed to inflate, but the RAF wireless operator-air gunner and an LAC passenger swam together towards the shore for 19 hours. They were picked up by a fishing boat when within a mile of land. The wireless operator-air gunner died shortly afterwards and is buried at Bari, leaving the LAC as the sole survivor.

29977Second Lieutenant Christian Lodewyk De Jongh, P1/40568, 2 Sqdn. (South African Air Force), aged 20. Killed in action, in North American F-51 Mustang #349. On a 64 aircraft raid against Pyongyang, 2Lt C.L. de Jongh was flying in the No.2 position behind his flight leader, 2Lt Earp, with Lt van den Bos and 2Lt Marchand in the No.3 and No.4 positions respectively. During their attack, 2Lt Earp saw 2Lt de Jong 200 yards behind him and to his left. On pulling out of his napalm run, 2Lt de Jongh reported that he had been hit and that he was heading out to sea, but did not think he would make it. The other members of the flight saw his aircraft briefly as it left the target area, streaming glycol. He was never seen again. In 2000, a South African visitor to Beijing visited a military museum there, and saw the remains of 2Lt de Jong's Mustang (349).

Died in Aircraft Accident, XF684 Provost T1, during night circuits and landings at Ouston Northumberland XF684 was climbing away. It was struck from behind by XF903 which was carrying out an overshoot. Both aircraft crashed and caught fire killing both crew.

Getting out of his sleeping bag when a Yugoslavian M-60P1HE HEAP STRIM rifle grenade exploded next to him, killing him instantly.

After an attack during which 2 men were wounded, he was part of a 3 man rearguard, protecting the evacuation of the wounded. He was shot and killed in this rearguard action but owing to heavy enemy fire, his body could not be recovered. His remains were returned to SA as part of a prisoner swap deal and buried at Roodepoort, next to his mother.
