During the recovery of the tank and rescue of the crew, he was wounded by a sniper. He was hospitalised with a gun shot wound to his left shoulder which resulted in a paralysis of his left side. He died later in the day.

The Regiment advanced up the road from Celleno to Bagnoregio and after having made contact with the anti-tank screen from the 26th Panzer Division, they withdrew and harboured for the night. Corporal Rennie was killed during heavy shelling of the harbour area.

Percy and his unit were travelling back from manoeuvres in the Brecon Beacons when their troop carrier rolled over. Several of the other men had injuries, but Percy the most serious, he sustained a fractured skull. He was taken to Atkinson Morley Hospital (specialists in brain injury) in Wimbledon, and 24 hours later he died.
