6183Flight Lieutenant Johannes Christiaan Frederick Du Toit, 110826, 218 (Gold Coast) Sqdn. (Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve), aged 26. Killed in action, Stirling W7613, on way back to base was attacked by a German night fighter piloted by Major Gunther Radusch of Stab. II./NJG 3 at 0104 hours and is believed to have crashed into Juvre Dyb to the north west of the island of Rømø with the loss of the entire crew. Pilot F/Lt Johannes C. F. du Toit and Pilot Wing Cdr. Montagu F. B. Read were both found drifted ashore near Hvidding on 17/10 and laid to rest in Fovrfelt cemetery in Esbjerg on 20/10.

21892Stoker 2nd Class Robert Pringle Ross, 69119, H.M.S. Laconia (South African Naval Forces), aged 23. Died of exposure, in lifeboat. U-156 sank the Allied liner Laconia west of Africa in what has become known as the Laconia incident. An American B-24 bomber from Ascension Island, piloted by James D. Harden, found the U-156 on the surface carrying out rescue operations of over thousand survivors from the sunken (by U-156) HMS Laconia. U-156, having radioed earlier that she would not attack any ship assisting, displayed a large Red Cross in hopes of making the Americans cancel an attack. Harden described the situation to base and was told "Sink sub" and then commenced an attack which damaged the boat. The boat radioed home about the attack and sailed west to repair damages.

26862Sergeant Jacobus Petrus Van Lelyveld, 778678, 76 Sqdn. (Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve), aged 21. Killed in action, Halifax W7812, on Ops to Flensbug, Germany. The aircraft was hit by flak over the target area and crashed with the loss of the whole seven crew.
