The Cenotaph at Victoria Falls (Northern Rhodesia Great War Memorial)
The Northern Rhodesia Great War Memorial, commonly known as the Cenotaph at Victoria Falls, stands just inside the entrance to the Victoria Falls World Heritage Site at Livingstone (then Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia). Erected in 1922 and dedicated 1 August 1923 by Prince Arthur of Connaught, Governor-General of the Union of South Africa, it was designed by the Bulawayo architectural partnership of Frank J Scott and James Robertson and built by master stonemason John Sheriff, in red sandstone quarried at Pasipas Quarry near Bulawayo. It commemorates 78 European Northern Rhodesians who gave their lives in the Great War of 1914-1918, serving across many Imperial, South African and Rhodesian units; two further marble tablets record that 102 Askari are separately named on the Northern Rhodesia Police Memorial at Livingstone. The base is inscribed "In memory of Northern Rhodesians who gave their lives for the Empire in the Great War 1914-1918." The memorial was restored by stonemason Mark Davison and rededicated as a cenotaph on 19 November 2017.
