Battle of Cuito Cuanavale Virtual Memorial

No physical monument or cemetery exists in Angola for these men — SADF Border War dead were repatriated to South Africa, and their national commemoration is the SADF Wall of Remembrance at the Voortrekker Monument (see Memorial #1). This page is a virtual memorial: it gathers, in one place, the ROH records for the campaign fought around Cuito Cuanavale, south-eastern Angola, from August 1987 to April 1988 — Operation Moduler (the Lomba River battles, halting FAPLA's drive on Mavinga), Operation Hooper (the push back toward Cuito Cuanavale itself), and Operation Packer (the final, largely unsuccessful attempts to force FAPLA's Tumpo bridgehead east of the Cuito River). Casualty figures for the campaign are disputed between sources (as low as 38, as high as 79 South African dead, depending on the source and exactly which actions are counted); this page lists only the individuals already documented on this Roll of Honour, cross-referenced to the specific operation where the record makes that clear.
