CWGC cemetery and Memorial to the Missing at El Alamein, Egypt, for Commonwealth forces of the Western Desert Campaign, principally the First and Second Battles of El Alamein (Jul-Nov 1942). The cemetery holds 7,368 burials; the adjoining Alamein Memorial (opened 1954) additionally commemorates over 11,800 Commonwealth land and air forces with no known grave who died in the Western Desert. South Africa's dead here span the South African Air Force, Artillery, Cape Corps, Native Military Corps, Engineer Corps, Tank Corps, and nearly every SA infantry and mounted rifle regiment of the period.
