Delville Wood South African National Memorial
South Africa's national memorial to its First World War dead, on the site of the Battle of Delville Wood (15 July - 3 September 1916), where the 1st South African Infantry Brigade suffered over 80% casualties defending the wood. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker with sculptor Alfred Turner, inaugurated 1926; a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023 as part of the Funerary and memory sites of the First World War (Western Front). Delville Wood Cemetery (CWGC), containing the graves of South African and other Commonwealth dead recovered from the battlefield, stands on the same ground behind the memorial; most Delville Wood dead have no known grave and are commemorated instead on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme (see Memorial #4).
