Cause of death
Killed by a ricochet when police pickets (hunting the Foster gang of highway robbers) fired on the car in which he was travelling with Gen. C.F. Beyers on the western road out of Johannesburg toward Potchefstroom.

Not on the main ROH (political / accidental death amid the opening of the 1914 Rebellion). Armstrong, Grey Steel (1937/2006 Just Done reprint): Beyers, mistaking the picket for discovery of the revolt plot, ordered the chauffeur to drive on; a policeman fired; the bullet ricocheted and a fragment killed de la Rey. His death delayed Beyers’s open revolt. Date conventionally 15 Sep 1914.
