William John CATER was born in Yate, Gloucestershire in 1875, the son of John CATER and Sabina nee SWADE. He was the eldest son in a family of 12 children. William's death is listed in some records as being due to fever. Three of his younger brothers were killed in action in WW1, including two who died on the same day at Verdun. There is a monument in Yate churchyard to the four brothers who died for their country.
