Long-term complications of a 1991 on-duty head injury 1
Died in ICU in Durban, 35 years after sustaining a severe head injury in a 1991 accident at 10 Artillery Brigade, Potchefstroom, while helping change a punctured wheel on a stuck Ratel on the last day of his national service -- the vehicle's inner wheel hub ('naaf') came loose and decapitated his friend, Gunner Grant Mann, and struck Milton, injuring him severely. He could not be airlifted to 1 Military Hospital; the ambulance carrying him broke down near Carletonville and he was transferred to an open bakkie for the rest of the journey. He received poor care at 1 Military Hospital and spent 18 months in a fetal position before a doctor at Hillcrest, Natal operated to release his contracted muscles. He was wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life.

SA Weermagtevereniging / SA Defence Forces Association National Executive Council obituary notice, circulated to members after his death on 6 Sep 2026: 'Cameron Milton (Gunner) passed away... Cameron was injured the last day of Service, walking to the Mess to have his last meal. On the way, good man what he was, helped a driver to change a stuck Ratel with a punctured wheel. He and his Friend (who was decapitated) by flying inner wheel hub (naaf)... He arrived in 1 Mil, got very bad care. He went into fetus stress position and stayed for 18 months like that... He was send off to Hillcrest in Natal, where a doctor had mercy on him, to cut his muscles so he can straighten... We will miss him at the Fishing.'
