Jim Reidford (ROH email 19 Feb 2017), citing the Edinburgh Evening News, Saturday 2 Nov 1901: "DEATH OF A SCOTTISH TROOPER. The photo is that of Trooper David Blackhall, news of whose death at Koomati Poort has been received by his friends at Granton. He went through the whole of the Natal campaign, and last April joined Steinaecker's Horse." From Granton, Edinburgh, Scotland; possibly born Leith South, Edinburgh c.1879 (unconfirmed by Reidford, who is researching the Blackhall family). Exact death date not given, only that news reached Edinburgh by early Nov 1901; he had served through the Natal campaign before joining Steinaecker's Horse in April 1901. Not previously on the ROH.
