This corps was stationed about Mafeking at the outbreak of war (a company 81 strong under Captain Cowan formed part of the garrison) and later served with Methuen in the Western Transvaal. Stirling, J. (1907), The Colonials in South Africa 1899-1902, as reproduced on the same unit page. Not previously on the ROH; Bechuanaland Rifle Volunteers did not exist as a unit in this database. Recorded in the roll as "died wo. 3.9.01" (Corps No. 119; attestation paper no. 26131 also shown). Surname read as Dary (handwritten; Deary is a less likely alternative). Stirling: at Zandfontein, 2nd-3rd September 1901, 1 man was killed and Lieutenant T. E. P. More and 1 man were wounded -- this date matches that action. Lieutenant More himself appears later in the same roll as a surviving officer (wounded, not killed).
