Battle of Wagon Hill / Caesar's Camp (Slag van Platrand): A Self-Guided Anglo-Boer War Battlefield Trail, Ladysmith Siege Museum Trust (Just Done Productions, Durban, 2006; revised ed., Eugene Campher)., quoting the original Monument plaque at Caesar's Camp (now destroyed, inscription recorded in the guide): "ERECTED BY THE BORDER MOUNTED RIFLES TO THE MEMORY OF THEIR COMRADES, TROOPERS J H COLD, TC FOX, RK HULLEY, BM LAWSON, WHO FELL ON 6TH JANUARY 1900 NEAR THIS SPOT." The Border Mounted Rifles (a Natal colonial volunteer unit) were sent to reinforce the Manchester Regiment's left flank on Caesar's Camp during the battle and retired in disarray under heavy fire. Not previously on the ROH; Border Mounted Rifles did not previously exist as a unit in this database at all.
Border Mounted Rifles King's South Africa Medal Nominal Roll, 29/9/1899 to 31/5/1902 (Record Office Discharge Depot, signed Fred. L. Thring, Capt. & Adjt., for O.C. Border Mtd Rifles, Ixopo, 18 January 1903) -- 6-page nominal roll scan on angloboerwar.com's Border Mounted Rifles unit page, 'Nominal roll images' tab.: this muster roll independently confirms a Border MR man killed at Ladysmith on 6/1/00, but gives the name as "Hulley, W.C." (Corps No. 436) rather than "RK Hulley" as read off the (now-destroyed) Wagon Hill plaque -- a larger discrepancy than a simple transcription slip. Probably the same man given the exact matching date, unit and surname, but flagged, not merged.
