Research notes

John Dovey, 1 Sep 2026 (findmypast.com, Anglo-Boer War Records 1899-1902, cross-checked against the Durban Light Infantry Chapel Boer War Roll of Honour plaque): Lieutenant A.W. Hall, Natal Volunteer Medical Corps (no service number given) -- NOT Durban Light Infantry proper. The Natal Volunteer Medical Corps was formed in 1895 partly from the DLI's own ambulance detachment, and Surgeon Lieutenant Hall's medical rank is consistent with attachment to/support of DLI forces rather than substantive DLI membership -- explaining his inclusion on the regiment's own chapel memorial despite his true unit being different. Regiment corrected from Durban Light Infantry to Natal Volunteer Medical Corps on this confirmation; still linked to Memorial 87 (Durban Light Infantry Chapel) since that is where he is physically commemorated.

Hall, Service No. 414, Natal Volunteer Medical Corps, served with the Durban Light Infantry, died of typhoid at Mooi River. Also commemorated at All Saints Church, Ladysmith. Confirms and adds a Service No. to the earlier findmypast-sourced Regiment correction (1 Sep 2026).
