Research notes

Source: Regimental History of the Durban Light Infantry, Vol. 1, Roll of Honour, "The South African War, 1899-1902". NOTE: the same source also lists a "Corporal D. Brown" in its separate Chieveley/Armoured Train casualty table with date 15 Nov 1899, conflicting with this table's 22 Dec 1899 -- likely the same man, source-internal discrepancy not resolved here; this record uses the main chronological list's date.

Brown (Presbyterian), Service No. 516, wounded and captured in the Chieveley armoured train ambush of 15 Nov 1899, died of wounds as a POW at Ladysmith. Three possible dates given (22/23/27 Dec 1899); ROH's existing 1899-12-22 matches the first. Also commemorated at All Saints Church, Ladysmith. Resolves the 31 Aug 2026 finding that no findmypast DLI record matched this man.
