Lt. Harry (Henry) Stephen Connell was a first cousin of mine. He was born in May 1923. He was in the SAAF training pilots. On 19/1/1944 he was injured at 21 Air School Kimberley as a result of a ground collision while training a rookie. He was taken to a Bloemfontein hospital where he died. He is buried in the South End Cemetery in Port Elizabeth. He had two brothers in the armed forces. One was Captain G R Connell (Ray) DFC who flew Hurricanes in North Africa & Italy. The other was Tony Connell, a sapper attached to an armoured division, who won the Military Cross. Interesting sideline... his mother received a telegram saying her son had recieved a mortal wound. A subsequent telegram stated there was a mistake in the wording. It should have been "mortar" not "mortal" wound.
