WWI service (not previously recorded on this record, which only carried his 1941 death): joined 1st Cape Corps as Staff Sergeant 4 Dec 1915; C.Q.M.S. 9 Jan 1916; the battalion embarked for East Africa 9 Feb 1916; C.S.M. 17 Apr 1916; acting Regimental Q.M.S. from 3 May 1916 pending commission; 2nd Lieutenant 16 Jun 1916; battalion in the Rufiji River campaign Dec 1916-Mar 1917 (action at Mkindu); battalion moved to Egypt (Port Suez) 19 Apr 1918 with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (Palestine and Egypt); wounded (G.S.W. right thigh) in action at Kh Jibeit 19 Sep 1918, handed over duties as Transport Officer; battalion left Alexandria for Durban Jul 1919, arriving Sep 1919; discharged 14 Sep 1919 on demobilisation at Maitland, Cape Town. Mentioned in Despatches for distinguished and gallant service with the E.E.F. (Gazette No. 31728, p.508, 9 Jan 1920). Medals: Mentioned in Despatches, British War Medal, Victory Medal.
