William Kerr was born in 1843 in Scotland. He married Annie Hislop in Tradeston, Glasgow in 1864. His trade was given as a Master Draper. He and Annie had four children in Glasgow. One died of scarlet fever and one other's birth but not death is recorded and there is no trace of her (so far found) as having arrived in East London when the family joined a scheme that brought people from Scotland and Germany in 1877 to settle farms in the Gonubie area north of East London. Two more children were born before William left to fight. His death meant the family had to leave their farm, but when he was older, William's oldest son John came back to farm in the Gonubie area. moira macdonald
