From Pierre Wessels: It was a long walk on the night of the 30th, everybody carrying 2x 81mm HE mortar bombs, 1 days food and water. It was dark moon and we walked single file to the 81mm fire position. I recall 26 km’s. Arrived at the form up area, Sers Mac de Trinidade who did the original recce was not sure of our exact position. It was decided to lay low for the day, the 31st, to give Mac the opportunity to pinpoint Cassumbi base.
We were actually less than 1000m away. Next morning before first light we formed up just north of the road going to Cassinga.
We could not reach the 81mm mortars and well after first light the decision was made to attack with 60mm mortars. As the we moved forward to the attack position and before the 60mm mortars could open fire an enemy security patrol walked into the skirmish line and the battle commenced.
We drew very accurate 82mm mortar fire and within the first salvo a mortar fell between the mag gunner and his Nr 2.
