Son of Mary Sloan Carlisle. "News has been received by friends in this district of the death, in South Africa, of Sergeant Jack Carlisle, 3rd S.A.I., who died recently at the residence of his widowed mother, in Ninth Street, Boksburg North. The deceased gallant soldier, was a son of the late Mr. Robert Carlisle, formerly of Conlig, [Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland] and emigrated about sixteen years ago to South Africa, where his mother joined him after his father's death. Deceased served through German West Africa, and on return at once volunteered for service overseas, where he saw service in Egypt and Gallipoli. In France later he was in many battles, including Delville Wood and Vimy Ridge, where he held up a party of 19 Germans for 19 hours. He was wounded at Verdun, and though given every help the exposure and wounds seemed to undermine his constitution, and from his return to South Africa in March, 1917, he had been almost continually ailing. Sergeant Carlisle also took part in the South African War. In civil life he was engaged in mining, and prior to enlisting was employed on the Glencairn Mine. Military honours were rendered at the funeral, deceased's mother, Mrs. Carlisle, being the chief mourner, and wearing her gallant son's many ribbons."
