ref. 85 years of SAAF
Mike Sandham's research log ("List 1"), imported 16 Sep 2026, credited to The South Africa War Graves Project unless his entry says otherwise: ServiceNo CORRECTED 69513323 -> 88466230PE. The stored number was contamination, not a reading of this man's record: PersonNumbers 33711 to 33715 -- 5 consecutive records -- all carried the identical number 69513323, which belongs to the record at the head of that run (33711, Vermaak, Daniel Jacobus (D J)). A value repeated down a consecutive block of PersonNumbers is a forward-fill import artefact, not men who shared a service number. Mike's log supplies a different and plausible number for this man specifically, so the stored value is known-wrong regardless of whether the replacement proves exact. The displaced value is recorded here.
25 Sep 2026, Unit2 service-branch sweep: the stored Secondary Unit "Army" was CLEARED. It was not a sub-unit, it was a service-branch word, and it CONTRADICTED this record's own Branch, "Air Force". Across the roll 787 records carried such a contradiction; judged against Corps and Regiment -- independent of both columns -- the evidence backed Branch 744 times and Unit2 not once. Branch is therefore kept and the contradicting word removed. Nothing is guessed: this man's branch of service is already recorded, and his sub-unit, if any, is simply not known.
