Enlisted into the 2nd Pretoria Regiment and served with them from February to September, 1940, and as Lance Bombardier with 93 Field Battery, Rand U.T.C., from February to November 1942, when he transferred to the S.A.N.F. He was seconded to the Royal Navy in February 1943 and saw active service as a Sub-Lieutenant, and later as a full Lieutenant, in Pacific, Italian and Mediterranean waters throughout the war. He was appointed Lieutenant, Royal Navy, in September 1949 and continued to serve until his accidental death in England in 1951. Locality was wrongly set to "Gauteng" -- corrected 28 Aug 2026 (second pass, this time verified against Cemetery rather than AddInfo text, after the first AddInfo-based pass was found to be unreliable and reverted). This person's own Cemetery is unambiguously outside South Africa; several other people at the same cemetery already correctly show a blank Locality. Cleared rather than guessed at a specific region.
16 Sep 2026, ServiceNo contamination sweep: the stored ServiceNo '74255696' was CLEARED. It was not a reading of this man's record. PersonNumbers 33319 to 33321 -- 3 consecutive records -- all carried the identical number, which belongs to the record at the head of that run (33319, Tredoux, Gabriel Francois (G F)). A value repeated down an unbroken block of PersonNumbers is a forward-fill import artefact, not men who shared a service number; the pattern holds across 850 such runs on this roll and is independently confirmed by Mike Sandham's research log, which attaches such numbers to the head of the run 167 times against 6 contradictions (all examined). No replacement is guessed: this man's real service number is simply not known, and a blank field says so honestly where another man's number did not. (Run extended upward to 33319, whose own number was edited later and so no longer matched the copies exactly.)
