Capt Christo Tiedt was a helicoper pilot in the SAAF. He was based at Ysterplaat Air Force Base. He was not involved in the Border War. They were stationed on board the SAS President Steyn. They were escorting a new Daphne class submarine on its way back to South Africa from France. In Luanda they experienced technical problems with the helicopter. After technicians worked on the helicopter, Capt Tiedt and three fellow officers took the helicopter for a test-flight. It exploded in mid air just after take-off off of the ship. All four the crew members in the helicopter was killed. At the time of his death, Capt Tiedt's wife was pregnant with their second child (born only months after the tradgedy). Captain Christo Tiedt was 24 years old and died on 25 November 1971. All four men were buried in Cape Town.
