Towards the end of 1987 two platoons of D Company (Jan 1986 ? Dec 1987), 1 Parachute Battalion were seconded to 5 Reconnaissance Regiment. The platoons were under command of Capt PA Pienaar (Pine), 2IC of D Coy and the platoon commanders were Lt J de V Kruys and 2Lt F J Wiese. Together with members of 5 and 2 Reconnaissance Regiments, the members of D Coy took part in an attack on a Swapo base in central Angola. The operation was named Ops Firewood. The attack commenced at dawn on 31 October 1987 and the SA forces only withdrew after dark on the same day. It was estimated that more than 300 Swapo fighters were killed during the battle. At the end of the day Cpl N S Olivier, L/Cpl R M Light, Rfn H N de Rose, Rfn D W van Rooyen and Rfn W F Ewels were dead, killed in action. Jean was my step-brother. He was never one to shy away from any challenge, in fact the more physical the better. Naturally when the Bats came around recruiting, Jean sprang at the opportunity. He and I were on the border together, the last time I saw him was at his base in Ondangwa. I have yet to meet a more gung-ho person. We lost a family member and a friend for no real reason. All in all a great and unnecessary tragedy.

We were Soldiers, once, and young! It is sixteen years ago today that our brave comrades paid the highest price for their unit and their country. Jean and I met during a combined ops with B and D companies in early '87. We became friends and shared many good times and laughs on the border. I heard of his death in the mid '90's but could not confirm the details or authenticity of the reports. Reading this takes me right back twenty years, a tragic and senseless loss. Jean & Nico Olivier were on PT course with me - Often when I wanted to quit both Jean and Nico would help me pull it together ...they where both made of the better stuff and made me laugh and able to endure one more round. The world is a poorer place for their loss.
