Listed under South African Army Armour (Armoured Car) (Regular) in the SA Army Units navbox, and still serving, based at Tempe near Bloemfontein. Took part in Operation Boleas, the South African intervention in Lesotho, in 1998. Now equipped with the Rooikat 76 and the Ratel 90 and ZT3; under Project Hoefyster it is to receive the Denel Badger in missile and fire-support variants. Deployment strength about 1,000. In the draft Vision 2020 force design it is charted as the armoured car regiment of the Armoured Brigade (Free State), Mechanised Division. Its sister unit 2 SSB (OrgEntityID 2257) was demobilised on 30 August 1997, leaving 1 SSB one of only two full-time armoured regiments in the SA Army.
