It was not a sub-unit, it was a service-branch word repeating what the Branch column already says. Secondary Unit is for sub-units -- a company, a squadron, a commando -- and this record's branch of service is unchanged at "Army".

13 Sep 1988: 85269033BG Gunner Andre Meiring from 4 Field Regiment was killed in a military vehicle accident at the Army Battle school at Lohatla. He was 19.

I was sitting with him on the back of the gun tractor traveling to our next postion. There were 3 gun crew on one gun tractor. We all had fallen asleep. He was the best and fastest gun sight operator in the whole battery. I never forget that night..

Van Tian Nieuwoudt: Was n hartseer dag gewees onthou dit nog soos gister. Hy het agter op die spaarwiel gesit omdat sy bediening se voertuig gebreek het en hulle op ander voertuie moes ry hy het glo afgeval as gevolg van die slegte pad weet nie of hy aan die slaap geraak het nie. Ek was die drywer van die gun trekker net voor die een wat hulle op was. Hy was een van die nicest mense wat ek geken het.

From Keith Hartmann: The vehicles were overloaded with Gun Tiffies he was sitting on the old Gun Tractors spare wheel with a blanket wrapped around him. We were doing night manoeuvres riding on convoy lights the convoy some how split into 3 and we all got lost. According to the drivers we were travelling at high speed 80km ph + . When we pulled into the Stelling the Number 1 Minnie noticed that Gnr Meiring was missing as he was the No3 on the Gun. Sgt Niemand took a search party to find Gnr Meiring when we heard the coms come in through the Fire Control Post we stood in solidarity and downed everything that we were doing. The Sgt sent myself and Skilly the FCP driver on top of a nearby hill to set up an OP post and to report any vehicles approaching the Stelling via A55 radio. That night it rained until morning and the wind was howling , one of the coldest nights that I have ever experienced in my life. Such a tragedy that could have been prevented with so many factors involved.
