Cpl Matshavha was a member of A Coy, 2 SAI Bn. On an UN (MONUC) deployment to the Democratic Republic of the Congo he was based in Kindu with the rest of the Battalion. We were busy with the normal staff meeting in the morning, when you could hear a commotion outside. Moments later a troop came running in and said there was an accident and somebody of 2 SAI was hurt. The OC went to the SAMHS Sickbay where he found that they were busy trying to resus Cpl Matshavha. Unfortunately he did not make it and passed away. The investigation found that he was talking to another person in the transport. They were standing in front of a Samil 20. A troop from the Signal Regiment got into the Samil, started it and drove off without noticing the personnel in front. He knocked Cpl Matshavha down and drove over his chest with the wheels. He was the first member of the unit that died in a peacekeeping operation. His body was placed on a SAF C130 with full honours and he was repatriated and buried at home.
