Research notes

25 Sep 2026, Unit2 service-branch sweep: the stored Secondary Unit "Navy" was CLEARED. It was not a sub-unit, it was a service-branch word, and it CONTRADICTED this record's own Branch, "Army". Across the roll 787 records carried such a contradiction; judged against Corps and Regiment -- independent of both columns -- the evidence backed Branch 744 times and Unit2 not once. Branch is therefore kept and the contradicting word removed. Nothing is guessed: this man's branch of service is already recorded, and his sub-unit, if any, is simply not known.
30 Sep 2026: DateBirth 1962-09-26 filled (was blank) from a family-supplied Memorial Service booklet: "James Thomas Marshall 26.09.1962 - 09.08.1982", service held St Albans Cathedral, Schoeman Street, Pretoria, Friday 20 Aug 1982 at 10am, Rev. Michael de Lisle officiating, address by Arch Bishop George Daniel, thanks given to "Janet and family". Consistent with existing DateDeath and Age 19.
30 Sep 2026: SADF Diensboek (service book) photo also supplied, confirming Surname Marshall, First names James Thomas, Date of birth 62/09/26, Religion Methodist. Force number handwritten and hard to transcribe with confidence from the photo (reads approximately "7451033B6" or similar) -- NOT used to change the stored ServiceNo 78456035BG since it cannot be read reliably; flagging only in case a clearer copy becomes available.
30 Sep 2026: REGIMENT CONFLICT, NOT CHANGED: this record's own CauseDeath text already reads "...together with 11 other soldiers of 1 Para Bn and 3 members of the SAAF", and the memorial booklet's cover bears a 1 Parachute Battalion badge (parachute canopy marked "1", eagle in the SADF/1 Para colours) dedicated specifically to him -- both point to 1 Parachute Battalion, not the stored Regiment "5 South African Infantry Battalion". Not overwritten since the record's own narrative text describing "11 OTHER soldiers of 1 Para Bn" is ambiguous as to whether Marshall himself is counted among the 12, or was a 5 SAI man riding along with a 1 Para Bn group. Flagging for human review.
30 Sep 2026: booklet also includes a photo of a small plaque (parachute/eagle emblem, two nameplates) and a separate photo of a wooden cross at a bush memorial reading "IN MEMORY HERE DIED 15 BRAVE S A SOLDIERS" -- both undated, no location given, nameplate text illegible at this resolution. Not linked to a specific incident here; noted in case a clearer copy or location turns up.

Paratrooper?s Prayer Heavenly Father, King of the world I know that all things are in your hands, whatever happens to me. As a paratrooper I am prepared to suffer hardship. I am ready to endure danger and unrest, pain and hurt. I am willing to be hungry end thirsty. I am prepared to face the enemy fearlessly. Lord I am weak. I cannot depend on my own strength. I do not want to trust in my own abilities. Lord my God; Let me trust in you alone. Give me courage and strength, and, above all, faith to do my work fearlessly ?
