Generic Regiment-field text used across hundreds of records whose actual unit is a specific local Commando (e.g. Rustenburg Commando, Boksburg Commando -- captured in Unit). Post-WWII, "Commando" is its own force-component category alongside Regular/Permanent Force and Active Citizen Force -- area-bound, part-time reserve units tied to a specific district, mobilised for local counter-insurgency/area protection duties during the Border War era. Not a single regiment; this Status applies to the whole category.

Research notes

Mike Sandham's research log ("List 1"), imported 16 Sep 2026, credited to The South Africa War Graves Project unless his entry says otherwise: gives Age 49 against this record's 19. This record has no date of birth, so there is nothing to adjudicate with. Flagged, not changed.
25 Sep 2026, Unit2 service-branch sweep: the stored Secondary Unit "Army" was CLEARED as a duplicate. It was not a sub-unit, it was a service-branch word repeating what the Branch column already says. Secondary Unit is for sub-units -- a company, a squadron, a commando -- and this record's branch of service is unchanged at "Army".
27 Sep 2026, Ventura crash sweep (prompted by the Palmer 32419 investigation): the stored cause of death, the Port Elizabeth airport Ventura crash of 4 December 1959, was CLEARED. It was never hers. PersonNumber 31623, three rows above this record, is T/Cpl Johannes Petrus Maritz, one of five 17 Squadron SAAF aircrew who share that exact cause text and that 1959 date -- Claassen, Jordaan, Louw, Maritz J.P., Venter. This record is a Rifleman of the Theunissen Commando who died in 1994, thirty-five years later: the text was copied down across two unrelated intervening records (Maritz P.J. 31624, Maritz P.R. 31625, each with their own distinct cause already recorded) and landed on the next Maritz of the same surname.
- Her own age is separately in dispute -- Mike Sandham's List 1 gives 49 against this record's 19, flagged on 16 Sep 2026 and not resolved by this correction. Her cause of death is not known here, and CauseDeath is set to "Unknown" rather than guessed.
