Research notes

Col (rt) Graham du Toit Last Post 22 Sep 2026: named as one of "Six members from 1 Parachute Battalion, attached to 44 Parachute Brigade... killed in Action in fierce close-quarter fighting during the BATTLE FOR MOKANYANE BASE in Lesotho during Ops Boleas". Exact match. The battle is named here where the record gives only the operation.
Col (rt) Graham du Toit Last Post 22 Sep 2026 -- DUPLICATE NOTED: PersonNumber 48837 is the same man, "Magwazana, Lucas Mnikeni", same forenames and same date of death, recorded against "SANDF Peacekeeping Mission (Lesotho)" with no service number, initials or age. This record carries 94783693PE and the 1 Parachute Battalion posting that Graham confirms. Merge held pending John.
22 Sep 2026: MERGED duplicate PersonNumber 48837 into this record on John's instruction. Both were Lance Corporal Lucas Mnikeni, killed on 22 September 1998; the surnames differ by one letter, 48837 reading "Magwazana" against this record's "Mogwazana". Graham du Toit's Last Post of 22 Sep 2026 names him among the six men of 1 Parachute Battalion killed in close-quarter fighting at the Battle for Mokanyane Base during Operation Boleas, which matches THIS record's service number (94783693PE) and posting; 48837 carried no service number, initials or age and was filed only under "SANDF Peacekeeping Mission (Lesotho)".
- ALTERNATE SPELLING PRESERVED: the surname is also recorded as "Magwazana".
- The peacekeeping-mission description from 48837 is the same deployment as Operation Boleas, named less specifically.
Mike Sandham OMISSIONS: 23 SEPTEMBER (mailed 23 Sep 2026, credited The South Africa War Graves Project unless otherwise specified): "Duplication? Person # 48837 Magwazana / 31492 Mogwazana - Same person." CONFIRMED and already done -- 48837 was merged into this record earlier the same day on John's instruction, after Graham du Toit's post of 22 Sep named this man among the six of 1 Parachute Battalion killed at the Battle for Mokanyane Base. Mike's mail is independent agreement on the identification.
25 Sep 2026, Unit2 service-branch sweep: the stored Secondary Unit "Army" was CLEARED as a duplicate. It was not a sub-unit, it was a service-branch word repeating what the Branch column already says. Secondary Unit is for sub-units -- a company, a squadron, a commando -- and this record's branch of service is unchanged at "Army".

Paratrooper?s Prayer Heavenly Father, King of the world I know that all things are in your hands, whatever happens to me. As a paratrooper I am prepared to suffer hardship. I am ready to endure danger and unrest, pain and hurt. I am willing to be hungry end thirsty. I am prepared to face the enemy fearlessly. Lord I am weak. I cannot depend on my own strength. I do not want to trust in my own abilities. Lord my God; Let me trust in you alone. Give me courage and strength, and, above all, faith to do my work fearlessly ?
