16 Sep 1999: One of the more unsavoury events in the history of 1 South African Infantry occurred when Lieutenant Sibusiso Madubela from 1 SAI went on a murder rampage and started indiscriminately shooting serving members at the Unit with his R4 Automatic Assault Rifle. Seven serving SANDF members including one female civilian working for the SANDF were murdered and another twelve SANDF members were wounded. Lieutenant Madubela’s murder spree came to an abrupt end when he was intercepted on his way back to the Base Armoury to replenish his ammunition. In the ensuing gun-fight, he was shot dead by Lieutenant Anton Otto and Warrant Officer Class I Aldo Mattheus. Those killed in this incident were: 84478957PE Major Jacques Coetzer.
