Research notes

Nephew Donald Press (email from guyleslie@aol.com, 27 Aug 2026) confirms Barnett was born and raised in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) as a British subject, sailed to London and enlisted directly in the British Army (Royal Engineers), and was killed in Korea defusing a landmine -- no connection to any South African force. Corrected: Unit was wrongly set to "32 (Buffalo) Battalion" (a SADF unit not formed until 1975, 22 years after his 1953 death) and Locality to "Caprivi" (32 Battalion's operating area) -- both stray artefacts of an unrelated batch unit-assignment pass, cleared. Force (was "UDF") cleared for the same reason: his service was to the British Crown only. Retained on the roll per the existing South Africa War Graves Project citation (his father was South African-born) pending John's call on inclusion scope for Rhodesian-British personnel with only a South African family connection.
