16 Sep 1991: Two members form the SADF Dog Training Centre died from smoke inhalation at Bourkes Luck while assisting to extinguish a veld fire. The casualties were: 89280580BG Lance Corporal Adrian Marcel Juskiewicz. He was 18. 88472451BG Lance Corporal Michael Swanepoel. He was 19.

89280580BG Lance Corporal Adrian Marcel Juskiewicz was my brother. The news of his death was devastating for our family... but the funeral was there saddest of all. Watching his fellow soldiers deal with the pain of saying goodbye to one of the own was heartbreaking. I remember the beautiful send off, the way those "boys" stood to attention and held back their tears. I can just imagine how haunting this experience must have been for all the soldiers at Borkes Luck Dog Unit. I still have his beret and the plague my mom received at his medal parade. The men who died as a result of fighting those veld fires are true heroes. Not a day goes by that I don't think of Adrian.
