From Carlo Gevers: I would like to set straight the records of the circumstances of our brother Udo Louis Gevers, who apparently died in an accident caused by a rolling Buffel troop carrier. I believe that this was not the case, as about 20 years later I was told by a fellow soldier that he was killed by another soldier of the same sector. It has been said that he was thrown off a moving army truck by a fellow soldier, due to jealousy over a certain girl from Tsumeb in the former South West Africa (now Namibia). I don't know how true this is, but why would the informant lie about this? We were told that the driver of this army truck was forced to write a letter to my parents, explaining what happened (which apparently was a cover up). How does the commanding officer and the driver of the vehicle live with themselves all these 33 years?
Just because a commanding officer has ordered an action, it does not guarantee that the truth was spoken.

From Carlo Gevers: I miss you Udo. After all these years, I often wake up at night after I dreamt that you were still alive. The dreams are so vivid and clear, it is almost unbelievable! I know you're in heaven, as I still vividly remember talking to you not long before you went back to the border in 1984. I can still see you leaving the farm with a very sore heart, after you told Mama that you don't want to go back. Mama told me that she had to force you to go and she fought back the tears. Rest in peace our dear brother. One day we will see you again, I'm convinced of it!

From War In Angola(host): We are so sorry to hear of this, Carlo! You are right in that only the truth will give you closure and it is only right that you should speak up for him. Maybe someone will have the heart and courage to tell the truth, especially after so many years. I cannot set the official records straight on the exact circumstances leading to his death, but I CAN give you and others a voice to speak up and which can be recorded for posterity.
