Sgt A.R. Foote's Story Sgt Foote (A.R) (Bob) was a flight mechanic on the first Alouette 111 that the Air Force lost. It happened in the du Toit's kloof when the chopper flew into some high tension cables. All aboard were killed. I saw the remains arrive at Ysterplaat on a Queen Mary. Very little left recognisable as a helicopter.

Bob Foote and I served together in 2 Squadron, SAAF, in Korea. I can recall one night in a tent. Following an argument I was suddenly faced with a loaded Garand rifle, aimed at my midrift with intent! Bob came out of nowhere and took the rifle and its aimer in one fell swoop, and I believe saved my life. Thanks Bob; I owe you one. John C.
