Killed in aircraft accident, Deputy Chief of Staff, Finance for the SADF was killed while travelling as a passenger in a SAAF 21 Squadron Swearingen Merlin 4A, Registration ZS-JLZ that as involved in a mid-air collision at night over the residential area of Swartkops with a civilian Piper Navajo, Registration ZS-KTX. The SAF Merlin was returning from South West Africa and was descending onto a wide left hand base-leg to land at AFB Waterkloof while the civilian aircraft was airborne out of Lanseria airport and routing for Wonderboom Airport, North of Pretoria. All three crewmembers and five passengers in the Merlin together with the pilot and three passengers in the Piper Navajo, were killed in the collision
