He was the first guy we lost from B company (July 80 intake). It was in a land mine explosion. I always liked talking to him at Oshikati, although I was not in his section and a rifleman we just clicked. The day he got killed I remember him sitting on his own in a tent near where we washed the pots and left terrs in body bags. He was crouched over, looking down at his hands waiting to go out on patrol. For some reason I didnt even greet him, next thing I heard the news. Looking back on it now, it was as though he knew his time was up, I can not explain why I did not speak to him, but maybe because he was in deep thought and contemplation. Then at Christmas 1982 we lost Bruce White and John Drake, all of them I knew as mates and all were English speaking South Africans. I never had any feelings before, brainwashed psycho thanks to the SADF. Now I am 50 and things seem clearer now. But the wars still continue and the infantry still bear the brunt of the mess. THE GOOD DIE YOUNG. They were good men believe me.
I remember Chapman as being a friendly guy . we were in in the same company Bravo but a different section. After all these years I still think about people like Chapman , Bruce White (Belair ) & John Drake ( Kloof ) all good men who died before their time.

Cpl. Chapman was with 8 SAI. We did our basics and JL's together. I was transferred after that to another unit. He was killed in a landmine explosion during a tour of duty with 8 SAI on the border. L.
I was in the same company as Cpl Chapman during our border duty the reason I remember him was that he was allways alphebetically behind me when we collected our pay. May he rest in Peace Derek Campbell
Peter and I were childhood friends in PE and rode bikes, played soccer in the park and the rest. Frequent visitor to his house in Cape Rd. He was the youngest brother of Roland & Mark. I now live in Australia but manged to see and photo his name on the memorial when I visted in 1998. Often thought of. There but for the grace of God go I, 2 years of army myself but never in danger.
