14 Sep 2026: Pro Patria Medal added earlier today REVERTED -- John obtained the actual Government Gazette (GG 5171/5575); the "died before completing the qualifying period" provision relied on does not exist in the primary text (it was a secondary-source claim). Actual Rule 5 requires (a) combat/enemy-caused incident, (b) a Ministerially-acknowledged operation (clasp), or (c) 55+ continuous/90+ non-continuous days in an operational area -- none of which this record's cause of death clearly demonstrates.

Oorlede in 'n buffel ongeluk, opad terug "states" toe na 3 maande opleiding saam met Infanterieskool. Ek was saam met hom in dieselfde peleton, hy was in die buffel wat voor my gery het toe die "barbed wire" losgekom het van die spaarwiel en in die regter voorwiel verstringel het. Die buffel het omgeslaan en ons het aanvanklik gedink dis 'n landmyn. Ek het die drup op my R4 se loop (blitsbreker) gehaak en dit so hoog as moontlik gehou terwyl hy behandel was, agter op 'n PB se bakkie. 'n Ander baie goeie maat, Pottie het sy een been verloor en later ook die ander een.

I was in the Buffel behind, on ur way back after 3 mnths, we initially thought it was a landmine. It was n fact the barbed wire attached to the spare wheel that came off and tangled n the right front wheel, causing it to lock and flipped the Buffel. Rfn P

Rfn Potgieter lost both his legs, one at the scene and the other later in hospital. Ek het die drup op my R4 se blitsbreker gehou, hoog in die lug terwyl hulle Sktr Bieldt behandel het. I will never forget this insident, RIP.....
